ARGENTINE ASSOCIATION OF CONFERENCE INTERPRETERS

ADICA, the Argentine Association of Conference Interpreters, was founded on October 2, 1979. Its key objective is to represent simultaneous and consecutive professional interpreters in Argentina, to extend the improvement and meaning of their activities and to benefit from an association which defends its members' interests and underscores the profession's prestige. Some of the Association's broader aims are: to encourage its members' professional performance, to respect its CODE OF ETHICS , which is an assurance both for the customer and for the interpreter, to protect its members'interests and promote the use of ISO Standards, ensuring that the interpreter's work and the indispensible technical support go hand in hand. Achieving these objectives allows ADICA members to deliver high-quality services, with excellence a common professional goal, in a highly confidential environment.
ADICA members have a reputation in the Argentine and international markets for the quality of their work and their permanent updating and training in all different fields of knowledge. Admission REQUIREMENTS include having received a college degree in this field of expertise, or else being able to prove sound experience as an interpreter. Some ADICA members speak a foreign language as their native language; others have received a bilingual education and have completed their training with travels abroad, not only to acquire greater linguistic skills but also a deeper knowledge of the culture of those countries where their working languages are spoken. There are also members who, in addition to speaking the languages and mastering interpretation techniques, have been awarded a college degree in the professions in which they work as interpreters.
Currently, ADICA represents more than 60 well known local interpreters, including all AIIC members living in Argentina. Services are available in ten languages as well as in all possible fields of expertise. Argentine interpreters, with their high quality, professionalism and strict adherence to their Code of Ethics, are undoubtedly the reasons why Argentina has become such a popular venue for international events, a growing trend in the last two decades. In times of globalization, professional interpreters have been essential to bridge the gap between different cultures and idiosyncrasies, at international conferences, business fora, throughout visits of foreign diplomatic and trade delegations, training courses and all other activities following Argentina's transformation in the last few years.
ADICA aims at promoting full knowledge of the profession as well as an awareness that the success of an event attended by foreign guests depends on communication. As an example, the Association supports the idea that interpreters work in teams of 2 people, unless the event is a very short one. Interpretation is a very demanding field, requiring full concentration. It is absolutely impossible for an interpreter to deliver the same high standards of performance for many hours running. For this reason and to ensure constant high quality of communications, interpreters must work in teams, taking turns every 20 minutes.
Likewise, ADICA is strongly against mass media's use of newscasters, as in the case of the world of television, acting as interpreters when they are not duly trained for the job and therefore frequently make mistakes. Consequently, the investment made in bringing important guests from abroad falls short of the objectives set, discrediting a profession with competent members to carry out the job.
